A web service has an associated definition file called a WSDL (pronounced WIZ-dull). You can point the Visual Studio IDE at the WSDL for a web service, and the IDE will automatically create all the code necessary for talking to the web service by using the standard SOAP code that web services use. So, for example, if you want to talk to a web service that is hosted at the following URL

If you need to use the URL the <actionURL> tag creates in another place in your JSP you can export the URL string to a page-scoped JSP variable. The var attribute , is optional, and if you do not include it, the default behavior is to write out the URL string as output. If the var attribute is defined, nothing will be written as output when the tag is processed. This is useful if you need to output the same URL in several places. We are going to use the var attribute to write out the JSP variable in a link further down the page:

For this example, the only place the logout URL will appear in the HTML is inside the link. The URL will not appear in the HTML where we created the action URL with the JSP tag. We could go on to create the logout link in several places in the HTML, using the logoutLink variable. After we create the portlet URL as a variable, we are not allowed to modify the URL to add parameters or anything else. Everything should be done when the URL is created, or you may need to create more than one portlet URL in your JSP page.
